1. Chat over a (virtual) cup of coffee

virtual coffee break

Participants: 2 to 10

Duration: 30-60 min

What you’ll need: Veertly, Zoom, Teams, etc.

Including regular online coffee breaks into your weekly routine may significantly improve your relationships with your colleagues as well as your group productivity.

How it works:

  1. Choose the day during the week when you all have the least meetings
  2. Agree on which time works best for everyone on the team (no need to schedule the coffee break at 9 A.M. — it’s the time to enjoy each other’s company, not a painful chore)
  3. Don’t talk about work-related stuff — this call is about you as people, not your weekly goals, achievements, and fears; save those for standups and one-on-ones.
  4. Repeat and show up diligently.

If you're strapped for time, consider using a service like Workdate to organize an upscale coffee chat.

  • promote mental wellbeing
  • strengthen the sense of community with the company

It all depends on the activity. Some of them (such as coffee breaks) don’t need any preparations, and all you need to do is go with the flow. Others (like online fundraisers or virtual escape rooms) would require more initial preparations, but generally, most work takes place during the activity, not before.

Can I do virtual team building without extra props?

Absolutely! Many of the games and exercises designed for online team building are built so that all you need is a willingness to participate. So don’t worry about any props and preparations 😊.
