3 team building activities you should do MONTHLY

Team building is a marathon, not a sprint.

It’s a cheesy thing to say. Yet, many remote teams consider team building a once-a-quarter event.

We beg to differ and raise you three team building activities you should do every month.

1. Use a team building assistant

Many teams aren’t sure what to do for team building or don’t have time to organize a monthly session. Result: Procrastination and no team building at all.

Team building apps like Gomada have a set of ready-made activities for your team and recommend the right one based on how your team is feeling.

How does it know what you need? It collects team feedback during activities, a Slack bot, and some proprietary magic 🧪

Every month, login, get an activity recommendation, and invite your team to an activity that makes you feel connected, appreciated, and happier. Best of all, it’s free. Create an account here.

2. Run a retrospective

How did excellent teams become excellent? By constantly asking themselves how they could be doing better and what tasks are a waste of their time and energy.

The tool for analyzing this is a retrospective (or “retro”).

Here’s how you can run a simple monthly retro:

1. Set up a recurring calendar meeting for 30-45 minutes

2. Ask the team to answer three questions ahead of time

  • What worked well?
  • What didn’t work well?
  • What are we going to try to do differently?

3. Set up a whiteboard (e.g., Miro) to take notes during the meeting

4. When it’s time for your meeting, let each team member share their perspective and discuss as a team

5. In the last 10-15 minutes, write down a summary of necessary actions and who’s responsible, e.g., “Jerry will hand off the hiring process to Alicia”

6. Don’t forget to revisit last month’s summary. Are you tackling the things you said you would?

Retrospectives are great for minimizing distractions and focusing the team’s time on the projects that matter most.

3. Company happy hour

Drinks and snacks will always be the great uniters of the workplace. There’s nothing easier and more fun than meeting up for drinks and chatting away.

How to do it:

  • Put a recurring meeting on everyone’s calendar (attendance optional)
  • Ask someone to be in charge of picking a fun venue (that could be you)
  • Ask your boss to pick up the tab - at least the first drink or two

And try not to talk about work too much, will you? 😎
